Secondhand Sureshots: RAS G “Planet Austin Invasion”

DOWNLOAD: RAS G “PLANET AUSTIN INVASION” MP3

See creative beat-making in motion. The beat in this film was created by Ras G one afternoon in Austin. All the sounds came from a small stack of wax bought in a single thrift store that same day.

The film was made by Alexandra Pelly and completed just hours after the music was created. We shared it with an enthusiastic audience that same evening to cap off the screening of our Secondhand Sureshots documentary film at the Alamo Draft House Cinema in Austin, Texas.

We hope it inspires you to make some music magic of your own!

Beats by: Ras G

SECONDHAND SURESHOTS: an experiment in creative sound recycling

SECONDHAND SURESHOTS

The Norman Lear Center’s Popular Music Project presents a preview screening of the new dublab documentary “Secondhand Sureshots: an experiment in creative sound recycling,” which features four amazing, LA-based beat makers – Daedelus, J.Rocc, Nobody and Ras G on a secret mission to create new musical magic from dusty thrift store vinyl. The event will also include a live sample and mix session with Secondhand Sureshot star Ras G. Audience members are encouraged to bring and offer up surprise sounds on vinyl for the mix as Ras G works to create a new song on the spot. Organized by Josh Kun, Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication.

Fall 2006: four highly inspired beat producers were brought together due to their common devotion to scouring record bins for magic amid the dust and discarded dreams. Treasure hunters Daedelus, J-Rocc, Nobody and Ras G were each taken to a different Out of the Closet thrift store and given five dollars to buy five records. Their mission was to create new songs using these vinyl albums. What they created was new music magic. Click here to see the trailers.

6-6:45pm : screening

6:45-7pm : Q & A

7-8pm : Live Sampling Session by RAS G.
