Who Owns the Noise?

Who Owns the Noise? A nightlife conference produced by People’s Soundsystem & dublab
People’s Soundsystem is a project born out of Artists Against Apartheid in LA that centers nightlife workers such as DJs, musicians, bouncers, bartenders, custodians and venues. We are organizing around real ways to use our skills, networks and creativity to build the movement for justice and liberation – from Palestine to right here at home.
This conference is a call back to a DIY conference several of us hosted at LACAN in 2020 called “Know Your Fight, Know Your Rights.” That gathering brought together over 150 participants and addressed nightlife issues such as art-washing’s contribution to gentrification, safety, and policing in our art and music community. We teamed up with Stop LAPD Spying Coalition after an underground show with many QTBIPOC show-goers was violently raided by police in 2019.
This time around, we’ve teamed up with Artists Against Apartheid to contextualize these issues within a larger framework of collectivized and politicized artists, show-goers and hosts, through music, speakers, workshops, and discussions focused on cooperativizing, resisting and politicizing our nightlife cultural spaces.
