Karim & Mara are soulmate homies that met in their late youth and quickly discovered that Cairo and Miami culture bleed into each other in magic ways. Discoteca 3ala Mars presents explorations of musical lineages between Masr, the 305 and the broader musical traditions of the surrounding regions and cultures. The intention is to explore and enjoy sounds that shape the experiences of third culture kids outside of the places they’re from.

Mara came back from a month-long visit to the motherlands of salsa with two USBs, each filled with 800 tracks of Salsa Caleña y los clásicos. This episode is a two hour salsa takeover, playing solely sounds from La Feria de Cali, found at the encuentro de melómanos y coleccionistas. This was the ULTIMATE HIGHLIGHT of the month, learning the moves & grooves of la calle before the moteléo afters.
Salsa caleña is known for its super fast tempo, much faster than Cuban or New York salsa that frequents Miami bars and clubs. It’s known for being percussion-forward with heavy congas, bongó y timbales, lots of tight, punchy brass and less extended solos, with a more constant drive. Keep an ear out for history tid bits in this love letter to salsa. xo
