The Year Was: 1983
01.11.24

With The Year Was, Annett is taking you on a journey through time. Each show, we’re traveling back to one year. What did it sound like – around the world, across different genres, scenes, and areas of pop culture?
This time we are revisiting the year 1983, the year that music became as chaotically diverse as we still know it today. Old stylistic boundaries were crumbling down. Suddenly, anything could happen: Run-DMC taking rap to the radio, rock bands revitalizing the underground, old-school legends reinventing themselves, and glorious one-hit wonders. There was early Madonna, LA Punk, Neue Deutsche Welle in West Germany, Lovers Rock, and New Romantic synth-pop, MTV, and the first portable CD players. Everything was bursting out into the Cold War reality and nuclear tensions.
It was wild. And the drum beats were razor-sharp. Welcome to 1983!
